Week 3 April 23rd - 29th

When I woke up on Monday morning we were in Fakarava. It looked very beautiful and the wind had dropped. After school we went ashore to explore. We followed the only road and saw some local schoolchildren coming out of their school. They climbed on the school bus which had no windows so we could hear them singing as they passed.

As we walked into town we saw a church near where Robert Louis Stevenson lived for a while, he was an author who wrote books like Treasure Island. I was feeling very hot as we walked along the concrete road so we went for a swim off a lovely white, sandy beach. Before we got into the water we saw a stingray swimming past that was the same colour as the sand. When we got back to the boat Mike did some windsurfing.

The next day we hired two scooters and drove around the island. The island has only one road. The island is long and narrow. At this part of the atoll it is slightly hotter because you are sheltered from the wind by lots of trees.

When we rode through the town we saw that all the house roofs were made from tin. This is so that when the rain falls in can be collected in big water butts. We also saw that all the houses were quite simple and were only one storey high. The island was very lush with lots of trees and bushes. I was surprised to see lots of pine trees as well as the usual coconut palms.

First of all we drove south of the little town and there were very few houses. After a few kilometres we turned around and went back to town where we had a really nice lunch and Daisy and me played on the beach while we waiting for dessert. After lunch we rode down the other side of the island. After the airport the concrete road ran out and became a dirt track. We continued to the end until we reached the pass and found a deserted beach where we all went for a swim. We returned the scooters late that afternoon and went back to the boat for supper.

Next day we went to the little shop. The water was so clear that as we walked along the road we cold see a shark swimming in the water alongside us. In the shop there was lots of food because a supply ship had just visited the island. After we stocked up with provisions we set off for the other side of the atoll.

The trip was lovely and calm as we sailed past some beautiful scenery. We could see an occasional house on the shore but mostly it was untouched. It was a three hour sail inside the lagoon but it didn’t feel very long because it was so calm. Daisy and me spent most of the trip in the hammock. When we arrived at the anchorage we went for a swim. I had never seen so much coral. There were so many different colours, shapes and sizes. We saw about twenty black tip reef sharks and two white tips swimming around us. There were loads of different fish in amongst the coral. All the fish’s sizes varied, some were big and some were tiny.

That night I read some of my book called VOX. VOX is in a series called the Rook Barkwater series, VOX is the second book in the Rook Barkwater series and the fifth book in the Edge Chronicles. I have really enjoyed them so far.

On Thursday after school I went water skiing. When I got into the water to put my ski’s on daddy saw a big shark near us. While I was skiing a fish jumped out of the water in front of me
